For European fleet drivers whose work takes them across borders in their vehicles, November marks an important change in inter-country legislation. No longer will it be possible to “get away with” speeding on foreign motorways without fear of being caught. From November 7th, 2013, 25 of the 28 member states of the European Union will be exchanging information on cars and drivers, with speeding tickets (along with notifications of other offences) delivered directly to the registered address of the car, regardless of which country this is in. It may well be that “tourist” drivers are more affected by the measure than business drivers. France attracts huge amounts of visitors by car from Germany, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain and the UK every year, for example, and one out of every five vehicles “flashed” is foreign. (...) Other offences concerned are non-wearing of seat belts, going through red lights, using a portable telephone, illegal parking… Fleet operators will need to make sure their company car policies are quite clear on these new points.
