During your daily commute, it is common for many of you to spend a lot of time stuck in busy traffic or, alternatively, to be driving long distances. You have no other escape than to turn on the radio and listen to some music. Depending on the song in question, music can act as a distraction, or as an assistance to concentration. The main point is that listening to music at a high volume and with a faster tempo influences driver arousal levels, making them speed up to match the beat of the song. Songs with a smoother beat, however, have a calming effect, make people feel less stressed and thus safer drivers on the road. Based on various research studies, the optimum tempo for driving music should mimic the human heartbeat – at around 60 to 80 beats per minute. Source: Road Safety GB
